Don’t Let Terri’s Fate Happen to Your Family Because of the Terri Schindler-Schiavo case, there has been a definite increase in the number of people requesting "living wills." The National Right to Life Committee has prepared a legal document superior to the "living will." It is called the "Will to Live." We must face the fact that many doctors and judges in today's society would believe that we would want to be dead as opposed to disabled. If we cannot speak for ourselves, food and water are likely to be denied to us. Be forewarned–-your parent, your spouse and your child could fall victim to dehydration and starvation should they merely become disabled. In the words of WVFL State President, Charlotte Snead, "The Will to Live authorizes exactly what kinds of care you want in the event you are unable to determine your medical choices. All of us have the right to choose -- except at the end of life. Secular doctors and ethics committees can decide for us what kinds of care can be withheld if we have not carefully erected legal protections...Pope John Paul did not choose dialysis and other treatments to extend his long and full life. God does not require us to remain on machines, but He Who is the Author of Life has numbered our days, and He should determine the length of them." National Right to Life has prepared a pro-life living will, which they call the "Will to Live," in the proper form for each state. All the state forms are available for download from the NRLC website at nrlc.org. You will be advised on filling out the "Will to Live", and informed about dangers in the "living will" forms available from many other sources. Help protect your family! •Remember that Terri Schiavo was an apparently healthy young woman when she suddenly collapsed. None of us like to think about it, but whatever their age or condition, every member of your family is at risk. • While state laws generally do not recognize legal documents signed by children under 18, it may be wise for those of your children who have reached the age of reason to fill out a Will to Live anyway. It may provide some evidence of their wishes that might help you fight for their lives. Don't Delay! Act to protect your family NOW! Don't let Terri's fate happen to your family.
