March 2017
Dear Friends,
The pro-life movement has always argued that we need to have judges, who value the Constitution, because we know the Constitution does not contain a “right to abortion.” Indeed,
the Constitution is based on the Declaration of Independence that guarantees us the “…right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” The “right to life” is our first right as American citizens. President Trump said the kind of Supreme Court Justice he would pick would “interpret the Constitution the way the founders wanted it interpreted,” and he has not disappointed his voters. He appointed Judge Neil Gorsuch.
Judge Gorsuch is a “textualist,” who establishes the meaning of the law in the actual terms of the law, not in legislative history that can be manipulated. He is an “originalist,” who interprets the Constitution in terms of how it was understood at the time of its enactment. He also supports the Constitutional separation of powers, providing for the Courts to interpret the law, not make the law. He has written, “In our legal order, judges distinguish themselves from politicians by the oath they take to apply the law as it is, not to reshape the law as they wish it to be.” He is also known for writing in straight-forward English. In one of his decisions, he used “plain old grade school grammar” and included a sentence diagram.
In addition, Judge Gorsuch is a native Coloradan and avid outdoorsman. He has outstanding credentials – B.A. from Columbia, J.D. from Harvard and Ph.D. from Oxford. He clerked for Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy before being appointed to the Tenth Circuit by George W. Bush. He gave strong support for the dignity of each human person when he wrote The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia in a series edited by Princeton Professor Robert George, who is a native of Morgantown, WV.
His nomination deserves our strong support and West Virginians for Life is working to urge West Virginians to call on our senators to vote for his nomination. Please contact Senators Shelley Moore Capito (202-224-6472) and Joe Manchin (202-224-3954) to urge them to vote to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States.
It takes less than 3 minutes to send Sen. Manchin an e-mail when you go to tinyurl.com/GorsuchAlert where a letter is already written for you. Just fill in your name, address and hit send!
To call him, just go to tinyurl.com/GorsuchYes and type in your zip code and you’ll be given the number to his West Virginia office along with talking points.
Don’t forget to tweet the Senator @Sen_JoeManchin.
We depend on our donors, who support us to do the pro-life work in West Virginia that will create a culture of life. We are the only single-issue, pro-life organization in the state. Please help us by responding with your financial gift here.
Sincerely, for life,
Wanda Franz, Ph.D., President
