11th Annual Dutch Miller Auto Golf FORE Life Tournament is an Enjoyable Success
Alicia Martin, Program Director
A full complement of teams arrived at the Preston County Golf & Country Club on July 8th for what turned out to be a beautiful day for a pro-life fundraiser. Title Sponsor Chris Miller, representing Dutch Miller Auto in Huntington, began the day with words of appreciation and encouragement to event participants.
After lunch, 30 competitors were joined by numerous spectators for the Putting Contest. Volunteer Michael Buchanan did a great job of emceeing the contest, which was sponsored by Shelly Snoddy, Esq., and won by Dave Carter. Then everyone was off to the main course, where numerous challenges and other contests awaited. Numerous golfers successfully met the Land on the Green Challenge, and several were willing to pay for the privilege that allowed them to tee off closer to one of the non-prize holes. The Closest to the Pin Winner was George Sodomick, the Longest Drive Winner was Larry Elliott, and John Cale secured the prize for the Longest Putt.
Harry Green Chevy Nissan sponsored three Hole-in-One challenges – including one for a gorgeous car. These prizes eluded all the players – although some players good-naturedly teased Dr. Wanda Franz that her eyesight was getting poor, since she “couldn’t see” their shots that won the car.
The two Snack Carts, sponsored by Mountain State Dermatology (Dr. Jeffrey Jackson) and Pediatric and Teenage Dentistry (Dr. Rick Day), were very popular. Participants were also very appreciative of the multiple coolers of drinking water, courtesy of Blake Wolfe.
While players enjoyed a dinner catered by Mountain State BBQ and the scores were tallied, a random drawing distributed numerous prizes donated by UniFirst, Fountain Springs Golf Course, Mountaineer Golf Course, and Preston Country Club.
The teams performed so well that the Third Place winner was determined by the game-changing 15th Hole: a four-way tie was broken there, giving the Prize to the UniFirst Team, which had a score of 61 (which was 11 under par). Only one point separated these four teams from Second Place: the Nestor Team, with a score of 60. And with yet another margin of a single point, the Trinity Assembly of God (TAG) Team secured First place, with a score of 59.
TAG was also a Platinum Sponsor, and the Wassick Novelty Company contributed both Gold and Silver sponsorships. Golfers saw these sponsors’ tee boxes, along with the many round hole sponsorship signs on the course. Country Road Digital Media and Sanders’ Orthodontics, who sponsored advertising and publicity, undoubtedly contributed to the event’s success.
WVFL also wishes to thank the numerous volunteers who gave of their time and talent so generously – your servants’ hearts were much-appreciated, and did not go unnoticed!
